I am thrilled to share some exciting news regarding the 2025 Ecological Society of Australia (ESA) Photo Competition. The ESA is the peak group of ecologists in Australia, boasting over 1,000 members and a distinguished 60-year history of supporting ecological research and promoting the importance of our natural world.
It is a true honor to have my work recognized by such a prestigious scientific community.
Category Winners
I am humbled to announce that two of my images were awarded 1st Place in their respective categories:
- Biodiversity on the Brink: “The Habitat” This image, captured near Laverton Creek in Altona Meadows, explores the intersection of nature and human industry. It highlights the beauty of local birdlife and landscapes while prompting reflection on our environmental footprint.

- Beneath Southern Skies: “Wetland Winter” Focused on the unique Australian landscape, this piece captures the stark, quiet beauty of our wetlands during the colder months, aiming to provide a sense of calm and connection to place.

Highly Commended
In addition to the category wins, my photograph “Together we Dance” received a Highly Commended recognition. This shot focuses on the collective movement and vibrant energy of birds in flight, celebrating the dynamic behavior of our native species.
A Shared Passion for Ecology
Being recognized by the Ecological Society of Australia is particularly meaningful because it bridges the gap between art and science. Through my lens, I strive to foster the same passion for nature that the ESA has promoted for six decades. Whether documenting a landscape at sunrise or highlighting the impact of human activity on a local habitat, the goal remains the same: to inspire a deeper appreciation and protection for our unique Australian ecosystems.
Thank you to the ESA judges and congratulations to all the other talented photographers and ecologists who participated!
