I am proud to share that in 2022, my photograph “Morning Dance” was shortlisted in the Birds in Flight category of the BirdLife Australia Photography Awards. This category, sponsored by Nikon Australia, celebrates the dynamic energy and grace of birds on the wing.

The Story Behind the Shot

The Grey Fantail is a familiar sight in our city parks, yet its beauty is anything but common. In this image, captured in Port Melbourne, Victoria, I wanted to highlight the elegance of this restless bird through light and action.

By choosing a darker background, I was able to emphasize the backlit wingspan, turning a fast-paced moment into a “beautiful dance”. It was a significant challenge to track and freeze such rapid movement, but the result perfectly expresses the spirit of this remarkable species.

Technical Setup

Freezing the motion of a Grey Fantail requires a high shutter speed and precise focus:

  • Camera: Sony A7R4
  • Lens: Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS
  • Settings: 346mm, 1/2000 sec, f/8, ISO 1000

This recognition continues to inspire my focus on the intricate details and therapeutic nature of the world around us.
